The Vintage Bronze St. Patrick with Snakes Medal shows the bishop in full vestments with his tall staff, standing on ground where serpents twist away beneath his feet and water lies behind him. SAINT PATRICK arches overhead. The reverse carries a plain Latin cross set against crossed palm fronds.
The serpents are the oldest thing in the picture. Irish tradition has Patrick driving the snakes from the island, an image the Church has long read as the driving out of the old paganism by the Gospel he brought. He returned as a bishop to the country that had held him as a slave, and by the end of his life it was Christian. This is an Irish devotional medal of the traditional kind, worn by his countrymen and by everyone else who claims him at least one day a year.
