The St. Philomena and St. John Vianney Medal sets two friends of heaven on one small rectangular plaque. The front shows Philomena in profile within an arched niche, haloed, a palm branch held down at her side and a lily stem rising beside her. The reverse carries the bust of a haloed priest in cassock and collar, facing the viewer.
The pairing has a history behind it. John Vianney, the parish priest of Ars-sur-Formans, credited Saint Philomena with the favors granted at his door and raised a shrine to her there, sending pilgrims to her rather than to himself. Her palm is the sign of martyrdom and her lily the sign of virginity; he is the patron of parish priests, and this medal is often carried by those asking for perseverance in a quiet vocation.
This medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
