Porsche 718 & 991 Smoked Side-Marker Overlays: A Small First Mod

There are a few things that make a Porsche look more American than it needs to. Bright orange front side markers are one of them.

That does not mean every owner needs to replace the lighting assemblies, wire in aftermarket LEDs, or turn a small visual change into a Saturday project. For the right 991 or 718, a smoked overlay is the cheap, reversible first move: it tones down the reflector visually while leaving the underlying assembly alone.

Overlay versus replacement side marker

A replacement marker is a new lighting assembly. It can be the right choice if the original part is damaged or you specifically want a different lens and LED setup. It is also more expensive and involves removing the factory unit.

An overlay is simply a fitted visual treatment for the existing marker. That is why it works as an entry modification: small cost, small commitment, and a noticeable effect on a light-colored car or a clean OEM-plus build.

Who this is for

This is for the owner who likes the shape of the car but wants the front corners to look less busy. It is not a performance mod. It will not make the car faster, and that is fine. A good build is made of small decisions too.

Fitment: read this before buying

These overlays are listed for the following vehicles:

  • 2012–2018 Porsche 911 (991)
  • 2016–2025 Porsche Boxster and Cayman (718)

Always confirm your exact car and the selected finish on the product page before checkout. Do not assume a 981, GT model, market-specific lighting setup, or a similar-looking marker is automatically the same part.

Installation is about patience, not force

Clean the marker thoroughly, make sure the surface is dry, align the overlay before committing, and work slowly from one edge. Do not rush the placement just because the part is inexpensive. A bad application is visible at the exact scale this mod is meant to improve.

If your selected overlay requires heat for final conformity, use only the amount called for in the product instructions. The point is a clean, reversible finish—not cooked plastic or distorted vinyl.

One important road-use note

Side-marker and lighting rules vary by location. A smoked overlay changes the appearance and may affect marker visibility. Check applicable rules before modifying any safety-related lighting or reflector, and do not treat an appearance upgrade as automatic road approval.

Why it is a good first mod

A $15-ish exterior change is not trying to reinvent the car. It is a low-risk way to find out whether you enjoy tightening the details of your own build. If you do, it becomes part of a broader direction. If you do not, you are not staring at a box of expensive parts wondering what happened.

Confirm exact fitment, chosen finish, availability, and local road-use requirements before purchase. Availability and pricing were checked when this guide was published.
