The Index — Genius Loci

The Index — Genius Loci
Genius Loci  ·  The Index A smarter way to discover what's worth buying

The Index · Methodology first

Most of the catalog
doesn't make the cut.
That's the point.

The Index is Genius Loci's short list — not another storefront. Every product in the wider catalog is a candidate. Only the ones that earn it get a full package here: a scored, written-up case for why they're worth buying, and what they're worth buying instead of.

Where this stands today: the scoring is built and being calibrated in shadow — checked by hand before anything is published. No entries are listed yet, and there's no launch date on this page because there isn't one to promise yet.

01 — Why an index, not a catalog

A catalog shows you everything.
An index shows you what's left.

The Genius Loci catalog runs to tens of thousands of products. Nobody should have to sort through that — and most of it, honestly, wouldn't survive a serious check. The Index exists to do the sorting in the open.

The catalog Everything

Breadth, unfiltered

Every sourced product, in every category. Useful as raw material. Not a recommendation — being listed there means only that it was available to source.

The Index The best of it

Depth, on a few

The small fraction that clears demand, value, and quality checks — each with a full package: the score, the reasoning, the comparisons, and the case for and against.

02 — How a product earns a place

Four stages. Most products stop at one of them.

Nothing goes straight from the catalog to this page. Each stage can — and usually does — end the run.

01

Demand first

It starts with what people are actually looking for — not with inventory that needs moving. Demand signals are gathered first, and a product with no real demand behind it doesn't advance, no matter how good the margin looks.

Honest limit: early on, many products will read as “demand: unproven.” That label stays until there's evidence — it isn't rounded up to a yes.

03 — What gets checked

The signals behind the score

These are the questions every candidate has to answer. The score is a summary of them — not a substitute for them, and every published entry will show its working.

a.

Real demand

Are people actively searching for, asking about, or buying this — or is it a product in search of a problem?

b.

Price against the alternatives

What does the same job cost elsewhere? A product only earns its place if the price holds up against the best comparable option, not just against a weak one.

c.

Quality you can point to

Materials, construction, reviews with substance, return and failure patterns — evidence, not adjectives from a supplier listing.

d.

Competitive position

If a better-known option does the same thing better or cheaper, that gets said plainly — including when it means dropping the product.

e.

Value for both sides

It has to be a fair deal for the buyer and viable for the store. A product that's only good because the margin is good doesn't pass.

f.

Knowable, not guessed

The score is built only from signals that can actually be checked. Where something can't be known yet, the entry says so instead of filling the gap.

04 — The score, while it's being calibrated

Three bands. One honest caveat.

Index Scores run 0–100. The bands below are the working shape of the system while it's calibrated against hand-checked spot checks of real products — so the numbers mean something before they're ever shown next to a product.

70+

Worth a look. Clears the basic bar — real demand, defensible price, no quality red flags.

85+

Strong. Beats the obvious alternatives on the signals that matter, not just one of them.

95+

Best of the best. The rare tier the full package is reserved for. Expect very few products here.

The caveat: these bands are in calibration, not set in stone. If the spot checks show a band is too easy or too strict, the band moves — and when scores start publishing, each entry will show the score it earned under the version in force at the time.

05 — The rules it runs on

What the Index won't do

  • —
No pay-to-listA product can't buy its way in, and placement isn't for sale. The score is the only door.
  • —
No padding the listIf only three products clear the bar in a category, the Index lists three. A short list is the system working, not failing.
  • —
Losers get dropped, not buriedProducts that fail a check are removed from contention. If one was previously listed and later fails, it comes off — with the change visible.
  • —
Methodology in the openHow scoring works is published on this page, because a score you can't inspect is just marketing.
06 — Where it stands

Built in the open, in order

This page will be updated as each stage actually happens — not before.

  1. Done

    The method is defined

The pipeline, the signals, and the scoring bands above are designed and written down — Index Score v1, built only from signals that can be checked.

  2. In progress

    Calibration in shadow

The scoring runs against real catalog products without publishing anything, while hand spot-checks verify the scores land where a careful human judgement would put them.

  3. Not yet

    The first entries

The first full packages — score, reasoning, comparisons — publish only when calibration holds up. No date is promised, because a date promised before the checks pass would be exactly the kind of claim this page exists to avoid.

  4. Later

    Index Drops

When entries start publishing, new additions will be announced as Index Drops through The Proof. Until then, that page is where to watch.
